What is a Sump Pump?
Sump pumps are used to remove flood water from basements and in situations where the water table is higher than the home’s foundation.
The typical residential sump pump system includes a sump basin made of metal, concrete or plastic capable of collecting between 15 to 25 gallons of water, and a sump pump that evacuates the water from the basement.
Why do I Need a Sump Pump in My Basement?
If you’ve lived in Rhode Island for any amount of time, you know that basement flooding is a common problem, and it’s expected to get worse. According to a December 2016 www.govtech.com article, “Six percent of residential structures within Rhode Island’s 21 coastal communities are currently vulnerable to some level of flooding.”
Taking precautions like installing gutters and downspouts, repairing foundation cracks, and making sure your sewer pipes or septic tank is clean and well maintained can lessen the chances of basement flooding. But even these measures can have limited effect in the event of a major storm.
What Type of Sump Pump is Best for My Home?
There are two basic types of sump pumps – submersible and pedestal. Submersible sump pumps are installed directly in the sump basin, while pedestal sump pump motors are installed outside the basin and connected to it by a collection pipe.
Sump pumps also come in manual and automatic models. As the name implies, manual sump pumps must be turned on and off manually, which can be disastrous if you happen to be away when flood water begins entering your basement.
Automatic sump pumps are equipped with a float switch that turns the pump on and off automatically, which can protect your basement from damage in the event you’re not home when flooding begins.
There are four different types of float switches on the market, including diaphragm, vertical action, tethered and electronic varieties. In many cases, sump pump repairs involve fixing or replacing these switches.
Common Sump Pump Problems
When it comes to sump pumps, there’s no such thing as a “minor problem” because even a small amount of basement flooding can lead to extensive and costly repairs. The most common sump pump problems include:
- Float switch failure or malfunction
- Burned out pump motor
- Power outage
- Clogged sump pump intake pipe
- Frozen discharge line
- Underpowered sump pump
When it comes to sump pumps, as with most things in life, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” So it’s a good idea to have your sump pump inspected before it’s needed. Having a reliable backup sump pump is also a good idea to protect against a power disruption or failure of the primary pump.
